How Often Do You Change Your Toothbrush or Toothbrush Head?

I look down at my toothbrush sometimes and I actually gag…it is true. Brushing your teeth can be a challenge for some and I count myself as one of them. And I am a dentist! So, if this is an issue for you, count yourself in my club.

Something that often is overlooked in the dental world is replacing your toothbrush or your toothbrush head if you use an electric toothbrush. Why is this important? Over time, bristles wear out and become frayed. They are no longer doing an effective job! They are supposed to be removing plaque and bacteria, not just moving it around. Add to it that bristles lose their smooth dome-shape that protects your gums and enamel from too much abrasion. Old brush heads accumulate debris and bacteria, making them a breeding ground, not a cleaning ground!

So, how often? Every 3 to 4 months is the recommendation of the American Dental Association. (even more often if you end up being sick…do not risk it, just change it!)

Let me offer some clever ways to remember when to change your brush/brush head:

*Use your phone calendar to set up a recurring event that reminds you about grandma’s birthday AND when to switch your toothbrush!

*There are actual apps for that! Some electronic toothbrush manufacturers make an app to remind you when to switch! Look into your brush’s manufacture or use a hygiene app like Toothy. (yes, it really is called Toothy…it is kind of like the joke we hear that someone wants to have an appointment at “tooth-hurty”—we really like that one!)

*Link it to another “habit” like changing the air filter in your furnace (yep, you are supposed to do that, too!)

Want to have more fun at the dentist? If your current dentist’s office does not make you feel confident or comfortable, maybe it is time for a switch of more than just your toothbrush!
