Oral Cancer-Are You at Risk?

Oral cancer refers to all cancers of the oral cavity, which includes lips, tongue, teeth, gums (gingiva), the lining inside the lips and cheeks, the floor of the mouth, the roof of the mouth (palate), and the area behind where your wisdom teeth sit.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer starts in the cells of the mouth.  Normally, these cells are resistant to damage but repeated damage from smoking, alcohol, or even friction may cause sores or painful areas where cancer can start.

Calling for a Dentist!

Dentists can play an important role in early detection of oral cancer.  Dentistry is all about prevention and protection.  The dental exam is the foundation of good oral health.  At your dental appointments, we take intraoral pictures to monitor oral health changes that you might not notice yourself.

What are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

The sore that does not heal, the lump in your mouth or throat, the white or red patch on your gums/tongue or the lining of your mouth, unusual bleeding/pain/numbness in your mouth, a sore throat that won’t go away, difficulty or pain when chewing and/or swallowing, swelling of the jaw, changes in your voice or unresolved pain in your ear can all be small signs that need attention.

Your dentist does more than protect and care for your teeth, gums and smile…a dentist is in a unique position to help in the detection of many medical conditions, including cancer.
