Starting Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of oral complications. Therefore, it is crucial to receive proper dental care during chemotherapy.

Recommendations:

Make sure you have a “right-fit” dentist (I wrote a blog post about this too…check it out!) Discuss your dental health history with your oncologist and communicate your treatment plan with your dentist. They can become an amazing team to help you address any issues that may arise during  your treatment.

Before starting chemotherapy treatment, have your dentist perform a thorough comprehensive examination to identify and treat any existing dental issues.

Throughout your treatment, brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, floss regularly, and use an antiseptic mouthwash to help maintain excellent oral hygiene. Notice that you have the side effect of dry mouth? Notify your dental office and there are prescription toothpastes that are available as options to help protect your enamel during this time!

Elective dental procedures should be avoided during your treatment if your blood counts are low, if possible. But! Do not forget about your regularly scheduled dental checkups! Every three months during your treatment, it is wise to follow up with your dentist!

If you experience any oral discomfort, such as pain, swelling, or bleeding, contact your dentist immediately.

Helpful Tips:

  • Eat a healthy diet low in sugar and processed foods.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.
  • Use a straw when drinking acidic beverages or avoid them all together.
  • Protect your teeth from injury by wearing a mouth guard during sports or other activities that could cause trauma.

The ADA has a website dedicated to resources relating to cancer therapies. Check it out here: https://www.ada.org/resources/ada-library/oral-health-topics/cancer-therapies-and-dental-considerations

By following these recommendations, you can maintain good oral health and minimize the risk of oral complications during chemotherapy. It is important to collaborate closely with your dentist and oncologist to ensure the best possible dental care throughout your treatment plan. Need a “right-fit” dentist?
